Organizing My Hard Drives-How Too

Today is Monday and I think every Monday I am going to post a tutorial or tips and help for anything I feel is worth telling fellow photogs in an easy to understand way! OK Now let’s get to it.

A few days ago, I was having so much trouble finding old photos I need for my wife’s scrapbooking project, the system I had for the longest time and thought worked wasnt. Turns out it doesn’t. So I sat down and tried to think of a different way to organize my images and keep them where they should, so I can find them fast, Either in Lightroom or not. I even searched the internet for some tips and I thought I would share some with you and show you how I did mine.

How I organize my images is as follows: One Main Image Folder (Main Raw) then into years (Images_2011) then into months (1109_Images_Sept) then into days (2011-09-29).

That’s how I keep my images closely organized and It’s easy to find them by searching and browsing. I just changed to that system this week-end because it was impossible to find things, by just searching them. I needed a change!  Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

  • Always stay consistent, Once you start a new system stay with it!
  • Use sub-folders, Folders in folders in folders, Makes it easy to keep things together.
  • Naming: My camera  puts a 4 number digit on all my photos, I. DON’T rename my images, (unless uploading) I like to keep them with the numbers, Makes it way easier to find them later, because they will always have that number associated with it

I like the way I organize my images, It’s easy for me to find things, Easy to keep track of things, and easy to search for them. I hope you find Hard Drive peace and my Post.
